Rock Manor Golf Course: Lester George's Wilmington Test

Rock Manor sits just off I-95 in Wilmington, the kind of municipal property most golfers blow past on their way to bigger names in the Philadelphia suburbs. They shouldn't. Delaware Today has voted it the state's best public course, and a single loop explains why.

The property dates back to the early 20th century, with a historic clubhouse circa 1921 and an original short layout that ran 5,779 yards. By the early 2000s the course had run out of teeth. New Castle County closed it for two years, hired Virginia-based architect Lester George, and reopened in 2008 with a redesigned 6,405-yard par 71 that uses the land's ridges and ravines instead of fighting them.

The Layout

The Black tees stretch to 6,405 yards with a 71.2 course rating and a 126 slope. That number understates what's out there. Elevation changes, forced carries over marsh, and a handful of doglegs do most of the defending. Move up to the White tees at 5,880 yards (69.0 / 123) and the round opens up without losing the character.

Three forward sets give the course real range. The Green tees play 5,257 yards at 119 slope, and a Red set sits at 4,422 yards with a 111 slope, which keeps the course honest for higher handicaps, juniors, and players who want a faster round.

One quirk worth knowing about: rounds typically start on the 10th tee. The routing makes sense once you're out there, but it's worth a heads-up so you're not hunting for hole 1 when the starter waves you off.

Holes Worth Remembering

The opener runs 359 yards as a sharp dogleg right that drops downhill the entire way. It's a soft handshake that turns into a club-selection puzzle once you see the bunker complex guarding the inside angle. Hit driver and you're flirting with trouble. Hit 4-iron and you've got a mid-iron in.

The 4th is the course's signature swing, a 562-yard par 5 with a forced carry over marshland off an elevated tee. The fairway tilts left to right and the green sits up on a shelf. Two good shots leave a short iron in. Most players take three.

The 7th packs more strategy into 315 yards than most par 4s twice its length. A ravine cuts the hole near the green and forces you to commit. Driver leaves a tricky pitch. Iron off the tee leaves a longer approach but a flatter stance. There's no right answer, which is the point.

Hole 14 is the round's best short par 4. At 333 yards it funnels through a tight marsh carry into a fairway that pinches right at driver distance. The green sits a little above the fairway and any back-pin position is genuinely scary.

The 500-yard 18th finishes the round with strategic bunkering rather than a forced carry or a green-side water hazard. A clean, fair closer that lets you walk off without giving back a good score.

Conditioning and Amenities

Rock Manor holds Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certification, which tells you something about how the grounds team manages the property. Fairways and greens stay in good shape into the shoulder seasons, helped by the irrigation system installed during the 2008 redesign.

The clubhouse dates to the original 1921 build and was restored when the course reopened. On the Rocks Pub inside serves breakfast and lunch and runs a real bar, not the usual halfway-house setup. The pro shop is well-stocked, and walking is allowed if you'd rather skip the cart fee.

Who It's For

If you live in Wilmington or northern Delaware and you're hunting a public course that plays harder than its yardage, this is the obvious pick. Green fees stay reasonable for a county property, and the redesign gives you enough variety to keep the round honest without crossing into beat-you-up territory.

Travelers coming down from Philadelphia or up from Baltimore should put it on the short list of public options off I-95. A 6,405-yard, 126-slope par 71 with elevation changes, forced carries, and an Audubon-certified setting is rare at this price point.
