The Name
What is a stymie in golf?
A stymie was a match-play situation where your opponent's ball blocked your line to the hole on the putting green and you were not allowed to have it marked. You chipped over it or played around it. The rule was abolished in 1952, and today golfers say “stymied” about any blocked or obstructed shot: a tree in your line, a bunker between you and the pin, any time the direct path is gone.
