The Haven Country Club: Championship Golf in Boylston, MA
Drive west from Worcester along Route 290 and you arrive in Boylston, a town where forested ridges drop toward the Nashua River valley. That terrain is what makes The Haven Country Club worth your attention -- and it is the same terrain that shaped one of central Massachusetts' most respected private tracks since 1955.
From Mount Pleasant to The Haven
The course opened as Mt Pleasant Country Club, built on land carved out of classic New England farmland. Original designer William Mitchell (1912-1974) used the rolling hills and mature forests to create 18 holes with varied elevation changes, tight tree corridors, and small, contoured greens. The layout held up well for nearly seven decades.
In 2022, the club brought in Ron Forse of Forse Design to execute a master plan renovation. Forse, whose portfolio spans several notable private clubs across the eastern seaboard, refined bunker complexes and green contours throughout the course. The result is a sharper, more consistent challenge that still carries the original character Mitchell built into the land.
The Numbers
The Haven plays to par 72 from four sets of tees. From the Black tees, it measures 6,492 yards with a course rating of 71.9 and a slope of 134. The White tees bring the course to 5,967 yards (rating 68.7, slope 126). Gold plays at 5,326 yards (66.7/117), and the Red tees come in at 4,326 yards with a slope of 106.
That 134 slope from the tips reflects the reality of the terrain and those small greens. The course earned its reputation as annual host of the New England PGA Pro-Pro Championship, which speaks to the caliber of the layout.
How the Course Plays
The elevation changes at The Haven are real and varied -- not just cosmetic rolls in the fairways. Holes move up and down through dense corridors of pines and hardwoods, and the tree framing keeps errant shots penalized. The greens run small by modern standards and slope in ways that are not always obvious from the fairway. Even members who have played the course hundreds of times report being surprised by the green breaks on approach.
Hole 1 gives you an immediate read on what to expect. It is a short par 4 at just 357 yards from the Blue tees, but it demands a precise tee shot. Long hitters can cut the corner over the trees on the right to set up a short wedge in, but the tall pines punish any shot that misses right. The green slopes deceptively, so converting a birdie from a good position requires solid putting -- not just a good drive.
The course rewards course management over raw distance. Keeping the ball in play and reading those greens correctly separates scores here. Walking is permitted, which members take advantage of regularly. The course is described by its membership as being just as fun on the 500th round as the first.
The Club
The Haven operates as a private club through the Invited network, which includes more than 300 country clubs and business clubs across the United States. Members gain reciprocal access across that network, a real benefit for golfers who travel for work or play.
On-site, the pro shop carries major equipment brands including Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, and Ping, along with apparel from Peter Millar, G/FORE, and Greyson. Head Golf Professional Christian Comeau runs individual instruction sessions using Trackman launch monitor technology for golfers looking to dial in their games. The club hosts regular member events, corporate outings, and competitive tournaments throughout the season.
