The 25 Hardest Golf Courses in America by Slope Rating
We pulled USGA slope ratings for every rated golf course in the US and ranked them. The results skew toward resort courses and major-championship venues, with a few private surprises.
Why slope rating matters
Slope rating is the USGA's measure of relative difficulty for a bogey golfer versus a scratch golfer, on a scale from 55 (easiest) to 155 (hardest). A slope of 113 is average. Anything above 140 is serious. Above 150 is punishing.

What this tells you
The hardest course on this list, Seven Canyons (Sedona, AZ), carries a slope of 155 — more than 30 points above average. A 10-handicap playing that tee shouldn't expect to shoot 10-over. Expect 15-18 over on a good day.
Most of the top 25 share a few traits: bentgrass greens running 11+, elevated greens you can't bump-and-run into, and carry-over hazards off the tee that force driver out of your hand. Slope captures the cumulative effect of those design choices.
