American Falls Golf Club: A Hidden 9-Hole Gem in Southern Idaho

Stymie Golf··3 min read

American Falls Golf Club sits on the Snake River plain in Power County, Idaho, about an hour south of Pocatello. It opened in 1959 and has been a fixture of southern Idaho golf ever since. The course sits along the old Oregon Trail corridor, and that history shows up in a literal way on the course: two holes require you to hit across Oregon Trail Road.

A 9-Hole Layout That Plays Full

The club offers nine holes, but the setup lets you play a proper 18-hole round by using two different tee positions. From the White/Blue combination, the full 18 plays to 4,582 yards at a par of 66. The course rating comes in at 65.2 with a slope of 113 from the women's tees, and 61.6 with a 102 slope from the men's tees. The Red/White combination measures 4,257 yards with ratings of 63.4/111 and 60.6/99.

Those numbers tell a story: this is a short course by modern standards, but it plays tougher than the yardage suggests. Tight fairways and small, firm greens demand accuracy over power. You can leave the driver in the bag on several holes and still find trouble.

Two Holes Over the Highway

The defining quirk of American Falls is that two holes require a carry over Oregon Trail Road, the highway running through town. One is a par 3, the other a par 4. Traffic isn't a serious issue -- the road sees modest volume -- but the psychological pressure of a road crossing adds a layer most municipal courses don't offer.

The par 3 plays to 145 yards from the standard tees. The par 4 involves a dogleg left that demands a precise tee shot before the approach over the road. Both holes are listed on the scorecard with lower handicap numbers, meaning the course itself acknowledges they're among the more demanding tests on the layout.

The Hardest Hole: Number Nine

Hole 9 carries stroke index 1 and plays to 384 yards from the White tees and 340 yards from the Red. It's a par 4 that closes the nine with a real challenge, requiring a solid drive and an accurate approach to a green that won't forgive a poor shot. After playing it once, you face it again as hole 18 on a full round, so it rewards golfers who take notes the first time through.

Course Conditions and Walkability

The layout is easy to walk, which is how many locals prefer to play it. Carts are available and well-maintained, but the terrain is manageable on foot. The course opens March 1 and closes November 1, giving golfers a solid eight-month season in this part of Idaho.

Golfers who have played here consistently point to the condition of the greens as a strong suit. The fairways are well-kept for a small-town public course, and the hills create some interesting sidehill and uphill lies that keep the round from feeling flat or repetitive.

Practice Facilities and Amenities

The club has a bunker, pitching and chipping area, and putting green for warmup. There's no driving range, so come ready to play. The pro shop carries apparel, gear, and snacks. The clubhouse lounge provides a place to settle up and recap the round.

Both men's and women's leagues run through the summer, and the club hosts Idaho Golf Association sanctioned tournaments through the season. For a 9-hole public course in a town of about 3,400 people, the competitive schedule is notable. If you're passing through and want to jump into a weekend game, calling ahead is worth the effort.

Getting There

The course is at 610 N Oregon Trail, American Falls, ID 83211. The phone number is (208) 226-5827. American Falls itself sits along Interstate 86, making it a logical stop if you're driving across southern Idaho. The Snake River reservoir is visible from parts of the course, and on a clear day the scenery puts you firmly in the high desert of the Pacific Northwest.

This isn't a destination resort. It's a well-run community course that has served local golfers for nearly 70 years, with enough personality to make it worth a detour. Two holes played over a historic highway and a reservoir backdrop make for a round you'll remember longer than the yardage would suggest.
